IN THE BETWEEN
Project Statement
The grain in a fine piece of wood creates movement, and the text on a page makes symbols, but it is the contrast between the two that illuminates meaning. This project pairs images together to provoke a comparison, a difference. By doing so, I want the viewer to fill the gap between the pictures with their own understanding, hoping that an awareness of oneness will arise.
I create these photographic images as one facet of my daily spiritual practice, intending each to be an outward reflection of inner harmony, balance, and beauty. I am still determining if I see these in the world or in my mind. I then spend time with these images, letting them speak to me and with each other, ultimately combining two to create the ambiguous gap In-Between. Artfully.
Every photo in this project records space and time, created by the inclusion/exclusion of subject matter at a fraction of a second on the line of time. Yet, it is just a reflection of the meaning I dreamed upon it, an observation of an observation, a symbol of symbols. These photos have no reality aside from what I ascribed to them at that time and space. Pairing these photos provokes a comparison between the two. An awareness of unity can be found in The Between.
There is a reality of divine unity beyond worldly awareness; glimpses of this unity can be recognized in the gaps between the duality of this world: the Yin and Yang. The perceived reality of the Yin is non-existent without an opposite Yang. Probing to reconcile the gap between them can reveal a hidden spiritual unity. From there, it is a shorter step to accepting oneself as being at-one in an apparent world of duality.
